- Mystery Meat Navigation -
This term was coined by Vincent Flanders of
Web Pages That Suck
and describes the practice of using a website navigation system where the
action of the links is not made clear until you mouse over them. See the
article on that site for a fuller description - he does a far better job
than I could!
Basically, the problem is this: it's counter-intuitive. It's excellent
where you want to make your website into a game of Memory, but as
navigation it's terrible design. Here is what my home page navigation
table could look like if I used Mystery Meat Navigation ... mouse over
a hexagon to reveal where it goes, then click it to go there (that's
also bad, having to explain what you have to do).
